If you’ve ever been interested in printmaking but are not sure where to start, this course will give you a taster of several different types of printmaking, as well as giving you room to experiment!

Over four weeks we will learn the basics of monoprint, lino printing, drypoint and collagraph to discover the different techniques:

• Monoprint – 24th February
• Lino printing – 3rd March
• Drypoint – 10th March
• Collagraph – 17th March

The goal is to sample a different types of printmaking each week and to understand the various materials and methods that can be used for each.

This is not a step by step course to all end up with the same picture(s). Instead you will be shown how to create your own designs and to explore the different options that can be used to make them into handmade prints. However, I have plenty of materials to help if you are stuck for inspiration!

Printmaking is a process that uses a surface design (on a ‘plate’ or a ‘block’) that is inked up by hand and then individually transferred to paper by rubbing or pressing. The process does not involve digital or inkjet printing machines and each result is individually made, even if the design remains the same.

For me, the joy of printmaking lies in the ‘happy accidents’. Seeing a design come to life, and often add its own elements to the process; each unexpected mark or colour combination can surprise and delight in a way you would never have conceived of yourself. Somehow a fairly simple drawing can turn into a charismatic print, when the quality of the line changes through the alchemy of the process. The simplest pattern gains resonance through the tiny discrepancies in the repeat.

Printmaking does not require you to have good drawing or painting skills. It simply requires you to have a go! Even a scribble can make a wonderful print… don’t believe me? Come and find out for yourself!
