This is a course for people who like to experiment and have fun with printmaking – no previous experience or artistic skills necessary!

We will start with the creation of our narrative and plan our composition. We will then learn how to break this down into planning our printmaking layers and the types of printmaking we will use for each layer.

We will use lino printing enhanced with monoprint, collage and block printing techniques to create the layers and by the end of the course we will hopefully have assembled everything into our final masterpiece!

The goal is to learn how to plan and build up a narrative work using printmaking.

This is not a step by step course to all end up with the same picture(s). Instead you will be shown how to create your own designs and to explore the different options that can be used to make them into handmade prints. This is an experimental process so be prepared to make mistakes and enjoy unexpected results.

Printmaking is a process that uses a surface design (usually on a ‘plate’ or a ‘block’) that is inked up by hand and then individually transferred to paper by rubbing or pressing. The process does not involve digital or inkjet printing machines and each result is individually made, even if the design remains the same.

For me, the joy of printmaking lies in the ‘happy accidents’. Seeing a design come to life, and often add its own elements to the process; each unexpected mark or colour combination can surprise and delight in a way you would never have conceived of yourself.

Printmaking does not require you to have good drawing or painting skills. It simply requires you to have a go!
