Bunbury, nr Tarporley

In the first two weeks we will experiment with different sketching techniques, discovering our preferred methods and materials. We will use still life arrangements and landscape views as inspiration, and work towards engaging our creative side (left brain) and stepping away from our controlling rational side (right brain).

The goal is to find a way of working that you feel comfortable with, or even several ways that you can use as a ‘toolbox’ to apply to different projects.

In the second two weeks we will experiment with composition, using thumbnail techniques to try out recognised composition forms. We will also look at using light and dark, and colour value arrangements to inform our composition choices. Again, we will use still life and landscapes to form our subject matter.

All sketches in this course will be experimental and not finished products. Although we will be looking at the same still life and landscapes (from individual angles) we will be focusing on the experiments with method and composition. We will NOT be following a step-by-step process to achieve a specific picture.

Please do not be shy or worried about joining in. Everything you draw will be part of your own learning journey and it’s only by playing and experimenting that we learn new things rather than repeating the same old methods and getting frustrated with the same old results.

You can treat it as a lovely weekly coffee morning, or you can come and play, push out of your comfort zone, make a big mess and work through frustrations… I will provide the structure, materials and hot drinks and biscuits – but the outcome is up to you!

*Please text or email me at least the day before if you are planning to drop in, to check that there is a space and so that I can have enough materials ready.
