Christmas Decorations Day

We enjoyed a lovely couple of days of Christmas workshops in November (how great does it feel to get ahead on the decorations?!).

First, a session using old books and wrapping papers for origami envelopes and miniature gift bags, to hold tiny presents in a homemade advent calendar or to hang on a Christmas tree. We started gently with some simple methods to create striking packets that could be scaled up or down according to the contents.

With confidence building we moved on to the gift bags… challenging but very satisfying when finally all of the folds and creases popped into place!

To complete the calendar we used garden twigs and a knotting pattern to create a mini Christmas tree – another decoration that can be used in multiple ways.

After a quick cuppa and a mince pie we moved on to making paper garlands… a simple method that creates a striking effect when wrapped around a basic willow wreath.

Beads and wooden snowflakes were applied to finish all of the pieces.

We had run out of time but for those able to stay longer we finished up with giant snowflakes made from book pages: again a lovely simple method that produces striking results.

Altogether the session showed how effective some straightforward methods can be in making stunning decorations – and if they use up some old books and wrapping paper as well then it’s a very satisfying outcome!

Congratulations to all of the participants, you made some beautiful decorations and I hope you enjoy them this Christmas!

Hopefully everyone will feel inspired to try some more projects and empowered to share their new found skills with others at home… a new family Christmas Day origami game perhaps?!
