Three intrepid wild willow weavers braved the weather to come hedge gathering at Sargeant’s Mess on 29th September.
Thankfully the rain held off and we started with a look at the types of items that can be made using plants from the garden, before we set off with our secateurs to get clipping.

Trimmings from a white poplar sprouting in a hedge were used to make a wreath, followed by the same treatment for a goat willow. Hawthorn branches with thorns clipped off with pruning clippers were then used to make uprights, and hops vines woven around them using a twining technique.
Everyone completed a small garden obelisk and then decorated further wreaths with brambles – learning how to use thorn strippers – and more hops.
Information sheets and frames made from lilac tree cuttings were handed out to take home, along with some
willow, and using their experiences from the morning they were able to complete their own flatweave project too!
Kerry said “I really enjoyed the Wild Weaving Workshop – not only did we make some nice things to take home, we learnt lots about which materials we can use from our own gardens for the various weaving techniques. A really informative, fun morning.”
Amazingly well done to everyone and hopefully they are now confident in their new knowledge to tackle the trimmings from their own gardens!
Thanks to Kerry for the pictures!
